The company began in 1998 as a consulting firm providing information and library services to writers and pharmaceutical companies. The business has expanded to three additional departments:
- OBC Eldercare: web presence for Parentcare 101 resources and the non-fiction publication CARING FOR A DISTANT PARENT;
- OBC Fiction: supports and markets the work of selected fiction authors; and
- OBC Chocolate: independent distributor for Xoçai healthy dark chocolate, a delicious, minimally processed treat that packs an antioxidant punch!
Charity Donations:
5% of all proceeds from Open Book Communications book and chocolate sales is donated to the National Book Scholarship Fund (NBSF) of ProLiteracy Worldwide. The NBSF is a grant program to supply local literacy programs throughout the United States with New Readers Press books and other educational materials.
Another 5% of the proceeds is donated to Clicking for a Cause, an outreach program of the Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Durham, NC. Clicking for a Cause supports woman and men who knit and crochet clothing, afghans, shawls and gifts for people in need and encourages members to transform the rhythm of needlework into a spiritual practice.
